Supplementary information

The MRPS22 protein also known as mitochondrial ribosomal protein S22 plays a significant role in mitochondrial protein synthesis. The protein has a mass of approximately 44 kDa and is a component of the small subunit of the mitochondrial ribosome. MRPS22 expresses in tissues with high energy demands such as the heart muscle and brain indicating its importance in cellular energy production.
Biological function summary

MRPS22 contributes to the formation of the mitochondrial 28S ribosomal subunit forming part of the mitochondrial ribosome complex. This complex is essential for translating mitochondrial mRNA encoding proteins necessary for mitochondrial respiratory function. Therefore MRPS22 maintains the mitochondrial translation machinery's efficiency ensuring effective protein synthesis vital to cellular energy production.

Pathways

MRPS22 is involved in the mitochondrial translation pathway which is essential for the production of proteins necessary for oxidative phosphorylation. MRPS22 interacts closely with other mitochondrial ribosomal proteins like MRPL12 ensuring coordinated protein synthesis. Through the oxidative phosphorylation pathway MRPS22 supports energy production critical for numerous cellular processes.

Defective MRPS22 function relates to conditions like mitochondrial disorders and certain neurodegenerative diseases. Mutations or inadequate expression of MRPS22 associates with conditions such as Leigh syndrome a disorder affecting the central nervous system. In such diseases disruptions in oxidative phosphorylation pathways occur causing energy production issues. Understanding MRPS22's role helps link it to mitochondrial dysfunction contributing to these diseases.
