Activity summary

MRPS31 or mitochondrial ribosomal protein S31 is a component of the mitochondrial ribosome small subunit. Its molecular mass is approximately 45 kDa. MRPS31 is important in the synthesis of mitochondrial proteins since it facilitates protein translation within mitochondria. It mainly expresses in tissues with high energy demands such as muscle and brain. Mitochondrial ribosomal protein S31 is essential for maintaining mitochondrial function under different energy requirements.

Biological function summary

MRPS31 participates in the assembly and function of the mitochondrial ribosome a complex responsible for protein synthesis in mitochondria. It interacts closely with other ribosomal proteins and rRNA to ensure proper mitochondrial translation. By engaging in mitochondrial ribosome assembly MRPS31 contributes significantly to energy production and cellular metabolism supporting the high-energy needs of various types of cells.

Pathways

MRPS31 plays a significant role within oxidative phosphorylation and mitochondrial protein synthesis pathways. Oxidative phosphorylation relies on the proteins produced by the mitochondrial ribosome with MRPS31 aiding their synthesis. The mitochondrial ribosome including MRPS31 collaborates with proteins such as COX1 in the respiratory chain to ensure efficient energy generation. This integration into critical pathways emphasizes its role in cellular energy regulation and homeostasis.

Associated diseases and disorders

MRPS31 is implicated in mitochondrial dysfunctions and neurodegenerative diseases. Mutations or dysfunctions in MRPS31 sometimes lead to disorders like mitochondrial myopathy where energy production becomes impaired. Moreover the protein's association with energy metabolism links it to Parkinson’s disease where mitochondrial deficits play a role. Direct interactions with proteins such as PINK1 in such conditions hint at its participation in disease pathogenesis and highlight its relevance in maintaining mitochondrial health.
