Supplementary information

The MRPS7 protein also known as mitochondrial ribosomal protein S7 plays a major role in protein synthesis within mitochondria. The mass of MRPS7 is approximately 20 kDa. The protein is expressed within the mitochondria of cells. It is a component of the small 28S subunit of the mitochondrial ribosome which is distinct from the cytoplasmic ribosomes. MRPS7 is an essential part of the ribosome's machinery ensuring the accurate translation of mitochondrial genes into functional proteins.
Biological function summary

MRPS7 is involved in mitochondrial translation a process critical for cellular respiration and energy production. This protein is part of the mitochondrial ribosomal complex which includes both proteins and rRNA. By playing an active role in assembling and stabilizing the ribosome MRPS7 helps in translating mRNA transcribed from mitochondrial DNA. This translation is necessary for the production of essential components of the electron transport chain which generates ATP.

Pathways

MRPS7 engages in the mitochondrial translation pathway which ensures the synthesis of proteins required for the oxidative phosphorylation pathway. It interacts with other mitochondrial ribosomal proteins like MRPS28 to form a functional ribosome. Through these interactions MRPS7 helps maintain the efficiency and fidelity of mitochondrial protein synthesis directly affecting cellular energy metabolism and homeostasis.

Research has associated defects in MRPS7 with disorders involving mitochondrial dysfunction such as mitochondrial myopathy. This condition impacts muscle function due to impaired energy production in the mitochondria. MRPS7 mutations may also relate to neurological disorders where mitochondrial performance is compromised. Such conditions often involve other mitochondrial ribosomal proteins like MRPL3 indicating a network of protein interactions necessary for mitochondrial integrity and function.
