Supplementary information

MSTO1 also known as Misato homolog 1 is an important protein involved in mitochondrial dynamics. It weighs approximately 64 kDa. MSTO1 is expressed in several tissues with higher levels in skeletal muscle heart and liver. This protein plays an active role in the regulation of mitochondrial morphology by promoting mitochondrial fission and movement within cells.
Biological function summary

MSTO1 influences cellular energy management and influences mitochondrial distribution. It does not form a consistent complex but interacts with other mitochondrial-associated proteins to maintain mitochondrial function. Proper functioning of MSTO1 ensures effective energy supply and cellular respiration which are essential for high-energy-demand tissues.

Pathways

MSTO1 interacts in the mitochondrial fission and fusion pathways essential for maintaining mitochondrial integrity and function. This protein works alongside other key proteins such as Drp1 and OPA1 to regulate the balance between mitochondrial division and fusion which is necessary for cellular health and homeostasis.

MSTO1 mutations or dysfunctions have been linked to neurodegenerative disorders and myopathy. People with alterations in MSTO1 may experience symptoms of mitochondrial disorders such as muscle weakness or neurodegeneration. Additionally MSTO1's relationship with proteins like Drp1 suggests a pathway connection where dysregulation could contribute to conditions like Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease emphasizing its potential role in mitochondrial-related diseases.
