Supplementary information

MT1G known as Metallothionein 1G is a protein involved in binding heavy metals such as copper and zinc. The protein has a molecular mass of approximately 6 to 7 kDa. It expresses in various tissues including the liver kidneys and brain. MT1G plays a role in maintaining metal ion homeostasis by binding and sequestering metal ions preventing potential toxicity. It is also known for its strong antioxidant properties offering protection against oxidative stress.
Biological function summary

Metallothionein 1G acts as a metal-binding protein contributing to detoxification processes and protecting cells from metal-induced damage. MT1G does not seem to form large multiprotein complexes but it interacts with metal ions regulating their availability in cellular environments. The protective effect of MT1G extends to the repair of DNA by mitigating the damage caused by oxidative stress which helps maintain cellular integrity under challenging conditions.

Pathways

Metallothionein 1G participates in metal ion homeostasis and oxidative stress response pathways. It modulates the availability of essential metals like zinc interacting with proteins such as zinc transporters. MT1G may also play a role in signal transduction pathways influenced by zinc. By controlling metal ion concentrations it helps regulate various cellular functions including gene expression and enzyme activity.

MT1G has significant associations with cancer and neurodegenerative diseases. In cancers changes in MT1G expression levels relate to tumor resistance and progression with possible interactions occurring with proteins like p53 a well-known tumor suppressor. In neurodegenerative disorders MT1G supports neuronal protection and function possibly interacting with amyloid precursor protein in Alzheimer's disease where it may assist in reducing amyloid toxicity.
