MT3 also known as metallothionein-3 is a small protein with a molecular mass of approximately 7 kDa. This protein belongs to the metallothionein family which is characterized by its high cysteine content and ability to bind heavy metals. MT3 is expressed mainly in the brain especially in neurons. Its structure allows it to regulate metal homeostasis and protect cells from damage caused by metal toxicity and oxidative stress.
Biological function summary

MT3 influences metal ion homeostasis and neuronal growth. Its role in regulating zinc and copper ions is significant for normal cellular function. MT3 interacts with other proteins to form complexes essential for neuronal differentiation and survival. It also exhibits neuroprotective properties modulating the effects of heavy metal ions and reducing reactive oxygen species which are particularly important in the central nervous system.

Pathways

The MT3 protein is critical in the regulation of metal ion pathways and oxidative stress response. It interacts with other metallothioneins like MT1 and MT2 which are involved in these pathways. MT3's participation in oxidative stress pathways highlights its role in modulating cellular responses to oxidative damage an important process in maintaining neuronal health and function.

MT3 has shown associations with Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. Changes in MT3 expression levels and its involvement with metal ion imbalance are linked to neurodegenerative processes. Additionally MT3 interacts with amyloid-beta a protein implicated in Alzheimer's disease suggesting a potential neuroprotective function. Furthermore MT3's regulation of metal ions might influence neurodegenerative pathways contributing to disease progression and providing targets for therapeutic intervention.
