MTBP also known as Mdm2-binding protein interacts mechanically with the Mdm2 protein. It has a molecular mass of approximately 125 kDa. MTBP expresses in many tissues with high levels notably in the brain and testes. The expression pattern suggests diverse roles in cellular functioning and development.
MTBP participates in the regulation of cell proliferation and survival. It acts as a part of the regulatory complex influencing the p53 pathway which is important for controlling the cell cycle and apoptosis. The interaction with Mdm2 affects the stability and activity of the p53 protein an essential factor in preventing abnormal cell growth.
MTBP has a significant role in the cell cycle regulation and DNA damage response pathways. It is widely associated with the p53 pathway involving p53 and Mdm2 proteins. The regulation of these pathways is fundamental in maintaining genomic integrity and cellular response following DNA damage.
MTBP's misregulation associates with cancer development. Its interaction with Mdm2 and p53 reveals a potential link to tumorigenesis as the imbalance can lead to uncontrollable cell growth. Abnormal activity or expression of MTBP also shows association with glioblastoma an aggressive brain cancer due to its regulatory effects on cell cycle and survival pathways.
