Biological function summary
Munc13-3 acts in the presynaptic region where it functions as part of the synaptic vesicle release machinery. It forms a complex with other proteins like syntaxin Munc18 and RIM proteins to facilitate neurotransmitter release. By interacting with these molecules it helps prepare vesicles for fusion with the plasma membrane modulating synaptic strength and plasticity.
Pathways
Proteins involved in synaptic transmission and plasticity often associate with Munc13-3. One important pathway is the synaptic vesicle cycle where Munc13-3 works closely with synaptotagmin and SNARE proteins to regulate vesicle docking and fusion. Another relevant pathway is the calcium signaling pathway which triggers vesicle release through Munc13-3's interactions with other calcium-sensing proteins ensuring precise neurotransmitter release in response to calcium influx.
