Supplementary information

Myosin 18B also known as MYO18B is a molecular motor protein involved in cellular movement and structure. This protein has a mass of approximately 229 kDa. It mainly facilitates actin binding and muscular contraction. Myosin 18B is expressed in skeletal muscle and cardiac muscle tissues and shows a presence in some non-muscle tissues suggesting diverse functions beyond muscle contraction.
Biological function summary

Myosin 18B plays an important role in maintaining the integrity of cellular and muscular structures. It is part of a complex that interacts with other cytoskeletal proteins contributing to cellular architecture. By localizing to the cytoskeleton Myosin 18B helps structurally support cells and tissues ensuring proper cellular organization and stability.

Pathways

Myosin 18B interacts with actin filaments within the cells which are pivotal in the regulation of cell shape and contraction. It participates in the Rho signaling pathway which controls actin cytoskeleton dynamics influencing cell adhesion and migration. Myosin 18B acts together with proteins like MYO9B in these pathways coordinating cellular responses to environmental and developmental signals.

Myosin 18B has a connection with certain muscular dystrophies and cancers. Mutations in the MYO18B gene have been linked to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy a disease characterized by thickening of the heart muscle. The protein's role in cancer is related to its interaction with the tumor suppressor protein APC indicating possible implications in tumor progression and metastasis. These associations with disease highlight the significance of further research into Myosin 18B's functions and mechanisms.

Target data

May be involved in intracellular trafficking of the muscle cell when in the cytoplasm, whereas entering the nucleus, may be involved in the regulation of muscle specific genes. May play a role in the control of tumor development and progression; restored MYO18B expression in lung cancer cells suppresses anchorage-independent growth.
