Supplementary information

The Nab2 protein also known as Nab2p plays an important role in mRNA export and processing. It is identified as a nuclear poly(A) RNA-binding protein with a molecular mass of approximately 74 kDa. Nab2 is expressed primarily in the nucleus where it binds mRNA molecules participating in their proper transport from the nucleus to the cytoplasm. By attaching to the poly(A) tails of mRNA Nab2 ensures their stability and regulates nuclear export processes.
Biological function summary

The Nab2 protein is essential in maintaining RNA metabolism. Nab2 acts as a component of the mRNA processing machinery and is part of a complex involving other RNA-binding proteins. By interacting with poly(A) tails Nab2 influences the length and composition affecting mRNA stability and splicing. As a result this protein has an important function in normal cell growth and adaptation to environmental changes.

Pathways

Nab2 actively participates in RNA processing and export pathways. It works closely within the nucleo-cytoplasmic transport pathway to facilitate the correct mRNA distribution between the nucleus and cytoplasm. Nab2 associates with other proteins such as Gle1 and Mex67 forming a network that guides the mRNA transport through nuclear pore complexes. These interactions allow a coordinated process that ensures mRNAs reach their cytoplasmic sites effectively for translation.

Alterations in Nab2 function can impact cellular processes leading to neurodegeneration and other stress-related conditions. Disruption in mRNA processing and export related to Nab2 can contribute to neurological disorders due to the protein's role in neural cells. Moreover aberrant interactions with proteins like FMR1 have been implicated in conditions such as fragile X syndrome highlighting the importance of Nab2 in maintaining neuronal health.
