Supplementary information

NCAPD2 also known as condensation protein complex subunit 2 is a part of the condensin I complex and is important for chromosome assembly and segregation during mitosis. With an approximate molecular mass of 150 kDa NCAPD2 functions as a regulatory unit within this complex. Researchers find NCAPD2 expression highest in proliferating cells especially in tissues with active cell division such as the bone marrow and some epithelial tissues.
Biological function summary

NCAPD2 plays a significant role in maintaining chromosomal architecture during cell division. It is a part of the condensin I complex which is required for the proper condensation and stabilization of chromatids through the cell cycle. NCAPD2 interacts with other proteins within the complex such as SMC2 and SMC4 to ensure efficient DNA packaging and separation aiding in genomic stability.

Pathways

NCAPD2 is heavily involved in the cell cycle control specifically during mitosis. Its role in these pathways ensures the accurate distribution of genetic material to daughter cells. Within the cell cycle pathway NCAPD2 associates with other proteins like topoisomerase II and aurora B kinase which are important for chromosomal segregation and cytokinesis.

NCAPD2 dysregulation links to cancer and congenital malformation syndromes. Abnormal function or expression of NCAPD2 might contribute to faulty chromosome condensation leading to genomic instability a hallmark of many cancers. Additionally mutations affecting NCAPD2 and its interaction partners like SMC2 might lead to developmental disorders characterized by structural chromosome anomalies.

Target data

Regulatory subunit of the condensin complex, a complex required for conversion of interphase chromatin into mitotic-like condense chromosomes. The condensin complex probably introduces positive supercoils into relaxed DNA in the presence of type I topoisomerases and converts nicked DNA into positive knotted forms in the presence of type II topoisomerases. May target the condensin complex to DNA via its C-terminal domain (PubMed : 11136719). May promote the resolution of double-strand DNA catenanes (intertwines) between sister chromatids. Condensin-mediated compaction likely increases tension in catenated sister chromatids, providing directionality for type II topoisomerase-mediated strand exchanges toward chromatid decatenation. Required for decatenation of non-centromeric ultrafine DNA bridges during anaphase. Early in neurogenesis, may play an essential role to ensure accurate mitotic chromosome condensation in neuron stem cells, ultimately affecting neuron pool and cortex size (PubMed : 27737959).
