Supplementary information

This supplementary information is collated from multiple sources and compiled automatically.

Nucleolar and spindle-associated protein 1 (NCAPG) is a part of the condensin complex important for chromosome condensation during mitosis and meiosis. NCAPG also known as CAP-G has a mass of approximately 110 kiloDaltons. It expresses highly in proliferating cells like those in bone marrow and the spleen. Its presence is critical during the cell cycle especially in the subphase of G2/M transition.
Biological function summary

NCAPG plays a role in maintaining chromosome architecture and stability cooperating within the condensin complex. This complex is essential for proper chromosomal segregation during cell division. It acts by introducing supercoils into the DNA promoting compaction and organizing chromatin. Incorrect functioning of NCAPG can lead to aneuploidy.

Pathways

NCAPG is a part of key regulatory circuits such as the cell cycle progression and DNA replication pathways. It interacts with other structural proteins like SMC2 and SMC4 within these pathways. These interactions are vital for replicating genetic material accurately and ensuring the proper alignment of chromosomes before cell division occurs.

NCAPG associates with tumorigenesis and cancer progression. High expression levels of NCAPG have been observed in different cancers including hepatocellular carcinoma and colorectal cancer. In these contexts the protein may interact with other significant factors such as Cyclin B1. Abnormal NCAPG activity can potentially lead to increased cell proliferation and tumor growth due to its role in chromosome stability and cell division regulation.

Target data

Regulatory subunit of the condensin complex, a complex required for conversion of interphase chromatin into mitotic-like condense chromosomes. The condensin complex probably introduces positive supercoils into relaxed DNA in the presence of type I topoisomerases and converts nicked DNA into positive knotted forms in the presence of type II topoisomerases.
