NCKX2 also known as SLC24A2 is a sodium/potassium/calcium exchanger with a molecular mass of approximately 73 kDa. This protein plays a mechanical role in transporting sodium and potassium ions in exchange for calcium ions across cellular membranes. NCKX2 is expressed in the brain especially in the neuronal tissues. It facilitates the extrusion of calcium ions which is critical in maintaining calcium homeostasis within cells.
