Biological function summary
ND6 contributes to cellular energy production. ND6 is an integral component of complex I which consists of 45 different subunits. This complex is the first and largest enzyme of the mitochondrial electron transport chain and plays a significant role in ATP production. By participating in the proton gradient creation across the mitochondrial membrane ND6 aids in maintaining proper energy levels in cells.
Pathways
ND6 functions within important pathways like oxidative phosphorylation and cellular respiration. It works closely with subunits such as ND1 ND2 and others in complex I to facilitate electron flow and ATP synthesis. The electron transport chain requires the coordinated activity of these proteins to achieve maximum efficiency in energy conversion from metabolic substrates.
