Supplementary information

ND6 also known as NADH-ubiquinone oxidoreductase chain 6 is part of the mitochondrial respiratory chain complex I. This protein contributes to the electron transport chain and helps catalyze the transfer of electrons from NADH to ubiquinone. ND6 has a mass of about 17 kDa and resides in the inner mitochondrial membrane. It is expressed in various tissues with high energy demand such as muscle heart and brain reflecting its role in oxidative phosphorylation.
Biological function summary

ND6 contributes to cellular energy production. ND6 is an integral component of complex I which consists of 45 different subunits. This complex is the first and largest enzyme of the mitochondrial electron transport chain and plays a significant role in ATP production. By participating in the proton gradient creation across the mitochondrial membrane ND6 aids in maintaining proper energy levels in cells.

Pathways

ND6 functions within important pathways like oxidative phosphorylation and cellular respiration. It works closely with subunits such as ND1 ND2 and others in complex I to facilitate electron flow and ATP synthesis. The electron transport chain requires the coordinated activity of these proteins to achieve maximum efficiency in energy conversion from metabolic substrates.

ND6 mutations have been linked to conditions such as Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy and mitochondrial encephalomyopathy. ND6 alterations can impair energy production leading to cellular dysfunction typical in these disorders. Proteins like ND4 also part of complex I often exhibit synergistic mutations contributing to the severity of associated mitochondrial diseases.

Target data

Core subunit of the mitochondrial membrane respiratory chain NADH dehydrogenase (Complex I) which catalyzes electron transfer from NADH through the respiratory chain, using ubiquinone as an electron acceptor (PubMed : 14595656, PubMed : 8644732). Essential for the catalytic activity and assembly of complex I (PubMed : 14595656, PubMed : 8644732).
