Supplementary information

NDUF3 also known as NADH dehydrogenase [ubiquinone] 1 beta subcomplex subunit 3 plays an essential role in the electron transport chain within mitochondria. This protein has a molecular mass of about 22 kDa. You can usually find NDUF3 expression in tissues with high metabolic demands such as the brain heart and skeletal muscles. It forms a part of the mitochondrial complex I which drives the initial steps of cellular respiration.
Biological function summary

NDUF3 assists in the proper functioning of complex I within the respiratory chain. As part of this complex it contributes to electron transfer from NADH to ubiquinone. This protein participates in maintaining an efficient oxidative phosphorylation process which is essential for ATP synthesis. Along with other subunits NDUF3 helps maintain the structural integrity and activity of complex I influencing the overall energy production capacity of cells.

Pathways

Oxidative phosphorylation and electron transport chains involve NDUF3 as a significant component. This protein makes connections with other complex I subunits like NDUFS1 and NDUFB8 to facilitate proper electron transfer and proton gradient across the mitochondrial membrane. These pathways are vital to cellular energy metabolism and involve complex interactions with different proteins within the electron transport chain.

Mutations or dysfunctions in NDUF3 have links to mitochondrial diseases including Leigh syndrome. This protein has associations with neurodegenerative disorders due to its role in maintaining mitochondrial function. NDUF3 disruptions affect energy production leading to cellular damage. Moreover its interactions with proteins like NDUFS1 have a strong connection to metabolic disorders signaling the importance of NDUF3 in maintaining cellular health.
