Supplementary information

NEDD1 also known as Neural Precursor Cell Expressed Developmentally Down-Regulated Protein 1 plays a significant mechanical role in the assembly of the gamma-tubulin ring complex. It aids in microtubule nucleation. The protein with a molecular mass of approximately 72 kDa exhibits a strong expression in actively dividing cells particularly in tissues like the brain and testis. NEDD1 serves as an important marker for understanding cell cycle dynamics due to its influence on centrosome and spindle function.
Biological function summary

NEDD1 contributes to the formation and stabilization of microtubule-organizing centers. It is an essential component of the gamma-tubulin ring complex (γ-TuRC) which is integral for the nucleation of microtubules. The localization of NEDD1 to centrosomes influences spindle formation during cell division which is critical for accurate chromosomal segregation. This biological activity highlights the protein’s role in maintaining normal cellular architecture during proliferation.

Pathways

NEDD1 plays key roles in the cell cycle and cellular division pathways. It associates with the gamma-tubulin and other centrosomal proteins like TUBG1 to regulate microtubule formation. During mitosis these interactions ensure precise chromosomal alignment and segregation. In the broader context NEDD1's involvement in these pathways supports cellular roles in growth and response to external stimuli bridging understanding between molecular function and cellular outcomes.

Defects or misregulation in NEDD1 function can lead to conditions like cancer and neurodevelopmental disorders. Aberrant expression or mutation of NEDD1 contributes to centrosome amplification and aneuploidy which are hallmarks of tumorigenesis. In cancer its interaction with proteins like Aurora A kinase influences mitotic spindle assembly errors highlighting its potential as a therapeutic target. Moreover studying its dysfunction in neural tissue provides insights into developmental abnormalities and neurodegenerative diseases.
