Activity summary

Neuronatin also known as Nnat is a protein involved in neural development. It exists as a polypeptide with a molecular weight of approximately 8 kDa. Neuronatin is expressed mainly in the brain’s central nervous system particularly in developing neurons. It plays a role in the differentiation and maturation of neural cells. Researchers also identify neuronatin in tissues such as the pituitary gland and the pancreas.

Biological function summary

Neuronatin influences the development and functioning of the nervous system. It does not form part of a complex but associates with lipid membranes. By interacting with calcium ions neuronatin participates in calcium signaling important for neuronal growth. Neuronatin also has a regulatory function in apoptosis the programmed cell death thereby affecting the overall cell population and neuronal health.

Pathways

Neuronatin plays a role in calcium ion homeostasis and neural signaling pathways. It affects the calcium signaling pathway which is essential for neural differentiation and plasticity. The protein calbindin which buffers intracellular calcium interacts with neuronatin in these pathways. Neuronatin also relates to the neurotrophin signaling pathway where it can influence neuron survival and growth.

Associated diseases and disorders

Certain alterations in neuronatin expression link to neurological conditions such as Alzheimer's disease and epilepsy. In Alzheimer's neuronatin's interaction with amyloid precursor protein can influence the progression of the disease. Concerning epilepsy changes in calcium signaling involving neuronatin may contribute to the disorder's pathophysiology potentially connecting neuronatin with other proteins like calmodulin involved in calcium regulation.
