Biological function summary
The protein is important for synaptic maturation and maintaining stable synaptic contacts. NLGN4 is part of a larger complex that includes neurexins which are presynaptic proteins. Through its interactions with neurexins NLGN4 helps establish and maintain the physical and functional interface between neurons facilitating synaptic transmission. This interaction is essential for effective neuronal communication and contributes to the structural integrity of synaptic connections.
Pathways
NLGN4 participates in synapse organization and intracellular signaling pathways critical for neuronal communication and plasticity. It is implicated in the neurexin-neuroligin pathway that regulates synaptic differentiation and adhesion. Within this pathway NLGN4 cooperates closely with other neuroligins and neurexin family members to influence synaptic network formation and plasticity essential for cognitive processes such as learning and memory.
