NS21 also known as nuclear receptor subfamily 2 group C member 1 functions as a zinc finger nuclear receptor. It has a molecular mass of about 50 kDa. This protein is expressed widely in diverse tissues including the liver brain and kidney. It acts as a transcription factor to regulate the expression of target genes across various systems.
NS21 plays a significant role in gene expression modulation by binding to specific DNA response elements. It is not part of a known multi-protein complex but interacts with coactivators and corepressors to exert its function. Through these interactions NS21 can influence cellular processes such as metabolism differentiation and apoptosis. These activities demonstrate its importance in normal cellular homeostasis and functioning.
NS21 participates in the steroid hormone receptor signaling and retinoic acid signaling pathways. It closely interacts with the retinoid X receptor (RXR) within these pathways to regulate gene expression. Through these pathways NS21 affects cellular processes that are critical for development and metabolism. By interacting with RXR it can influence the transcription of genes involved in several essential biological functions.
NS21 involvement has been observed in metabolic disorders and certain types of cancer.
