NUFIP1 or Nuclear Fragile X Mental Retardation Interacting Protein 1 functions as an important component in ribosome biogenesis. It has a molecular mass of approximately 90 kDa. This protein interacts with ribosomal RNA and facilitates the stabilization of the 90S pre-ribosomal particle. NUFIP1 exists in multiple cellular compartments including the nucleolus which indicates its role in ribosome assembly and processing within the nuclear environment.
NUFIP1 contributes to the maturation of ribosomal RNA as part of the ribonucleoprotein complex specifically the box C/D snoRNP complex. Its involvement in the assembly of ribosomal components is essential for the proper synthesis of ribosomes. NUFIP1's role in snoRNPs suggests it participates in chemical modifications on rRNA most notably methylation a critical modification in the ribosome's function.
NUFIP1 actively participates in the ribosome biogenesis in the nucleolus and cytosolic ribosome pathways. It interacts closely with partner proteins like SURF6 and NOP58 which are critical components in these pathways. These interactions ensure the proper production and function of ribosomes ensuring effective cellular protein synthesis.
Researchers have linked abnormalities in NUFIP1 to disorders such as Fragile X syndrome and cancer. In Fragile X syndrome its interaction with the fragile X mental retardation protein (FMRP) highlights its importance in neuronal development. In cancer dysregulation in ribosome synthesis where NUFIP1 is involved can lead to uncontrolled cell growth illustrating its potential role in tumorigenesis.
