Supplementary information

NUP160 also known as nucleoporin 160 is a component of the nuclear pore complex (NPC). It has a molecular mass of approximately 160 kDa. NUP160 is expressed in many types of cells throughout the body particularly in the nuclear envelope where it plays a role in nucleo-cytoplasmic transport. NUP160 forms a part of the structural scaffold of the nuclear pore complex which is essential for the transport of molecules between the nucleus and the cytoplasm.
Biological function summary

NUP160 plays an important function in the regulation of RNA and protein transport across the nuclear envelope. This protein is a part of the Y-complex an important structural component of the nuclear pore complex consisting of multiple nucleoporins. NUP160 contributes to the assembly and maintenance of the pore. By facilitating the controlled exchange of macromolecules NUP160 helps maintain cellular homeostasis and the flow of genetic information.

Pathways

NUP160 is critically involved in nucleocytoplasmic transport and gene expression regulation. It plays a significant role in the transport pathway where it interacts with importins and exportins proteins that mediate the transport of cargo molecules through the nuclear pore complex. NUP160 also links to the Ran GTPase cycle an important process for directional transport by working with related proteins like RanBP2.

NUP160 is associated with nephrotic syndrome and cancer. Abnormal expression or mutations in NUP160 and the related protein NUP93 have been observed in cases of steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome affecting kidney function. Additionally alterations in NUP160 expression can influence oncogenesis as the protein's disruption could lead to faulty nucleocytoplasmic transport contributing to cancer progression. Understanding the connection between NUP160 and these diseases can offer insights into potential therapeutic targets.
