NUP35 also known as Nucleoporin 35 kDa is a nuclear pore complex protein with a mass of about 35 kDa. It plays an important mechanical role in regulating the transport of molecules between the nucleus and the cytoplasm. NUP35 is expressed ubiquitously in eukaryotic cells. It takes part in forming the nuclear pore complex structure which acts as a gateway for nucleocytoplasmic transport.
Biological function summary

NUP35 is involved in the composition of the nuclear pore complex (NPC) essential for cellular function. As a component of NPC NUP35 interacts with other nucleoporins to help maintain the NPC's architecture and stability. This structure allows selective molecular trafficking like RNA export and import of proteins supporting essential cellular processes. NUP35 contributes to maintaining the dynamic barrier and transport of molecules ensuring correct cellular homeostasis.

Pathways

NUP35's role in nucleocytoplasmic transport has implications in pathways like RNA transport and gene expression regulation. It interacts closely with other nucleoporins within the nuclear pore complex. The NPC itself intersects with key pathways responsible for mRNA export from the nucleus to the cytoplasm primarily interacting with proteins such as NUP98 and NUP62 which play roles in facilitating efficient transport processes.

Faulty NUP35 function relates to diseases like cancer and neurodegenerative disorders. Aberrations in its function can lead to altered nucleocytoplasmic transport dynamics potentially causing cellular proliferation or apoptosis. The improper regulation can further influence other related proteins such as NUP214 which has been implicated in leukemia highlighting the importance of normal NUP35 function in health and disease.

Target data

Functions as a component of the nuclear pore complex (NPC). NPC components, collectively referred to as nucleoporins (NUPs), can play the role of both NPC structural components and of docking or interaction partners for transiently associated nuclear transport factors. May play a role in the association of MAD1 with the NPC.
