Supplementary information

NUP43 also known as nucleoporin 43 is an important component of the nuclear pore complex (NPC). Weighing approximately 43 kDa this protein is expressed in the nuclear envelope of eukaryotic cells. NUP43 is part of the Y-complex which plays a mechanical role in mediating the transport of molecules between the nucleus and the cytoplasm. Its presence in the nuclear pore structure facilitates important cellular functions including regulation and signaling.
Biological function summary

The organization and function of the nuclear pore complex involve NUP43 integration. It forms part of a larger supramolecular structure assisting in functions alongside other nucleoporins. Inside the NPC NUP43 contributes to nuclear-cytoplasmic transport by interacting with transport receptors and cargo molecules. This interaction regulates the entry and exit of macromolecules maintaining cellular homeostasis and gene expression processes.

Pathways

NUP43 integrates cellular pathways related to nucleocytoplasmic transport and mRNA processing. It functions in tandem with other nucleoporins within the NPC such as NUP107 to control the flow of genetic information and proteins. The precise regulation through these pathways ensures cellular integrity and proper gene expression affecting a range of cellular activities essential for cell survival and adaptation.

Abnormal function or expression of NUP43 links to disorders like cancer and neurodegenerative diseases. It often associates with other nucleoporins such as NUP133 in pathologies where nuclear transport is disrupted. Understanding the role of NUP43 in these diseases contributes to insights into potential therapeutic targets which may help in the development of interventions to modulate its activity or interactions in the disease context.

Target data

Component of the Nup107-160 subcomplex of the nuclear pore complex (NPC). The Nup107-160 subcomplex is required for the assembly of a functional NPC. The Nup107-160 subcomplex is also required for normal kinetochore microtubule attachment, mitotic progression and chromosome segregation.
