NUP54 also known as Nuclear Pore Complex Protein Nup54 or nucleoporin 54kDa functions as a part of the nuclear pore complex (NPC) a structure facilitating the transport of molecules across the nuclear envelope. This protein has a molecular mass of approximately 54 kDa and is ubiquitously expressed in eukaryotic cells. NUP54 is integral to the assembly and stability of the NPC and it assists in the regulation of nucleocytoplasmic transport by acting as a structural component within the pore.
Biological function summary

NUP54 plays an important role in the movement of proteins and RNA due to its position within the nuclear pore complex. Acting as a pivotal component of the NPC NUP54 interacts with other nucleoporins to form a selective barrier that controls the bidirectional movement of molecules. Proteins such as NUP62 and NUP58 are also part of this complex working alongside NUP54 to ensure efficient transport processes necessary for cell function and regulation.

Pathways

NUP54 is significantly involved in the protein and mRNA export pathways essential steps for cellular communication and regulation. It ensures the proper translocation of molecules through the nuclear pore working closely with other proteins such as importins and exportins within these pathways. NUP54's involvement in these pathways highlights its importance in maintaining cellular homeostasis and facilitating signal transduction from the nucleus to the cytoplasm.

NUP54 has connections to specific conditions such as neurodegenerative diseases and cancer. Mutations or dysregulation in NUP54 can lead to altered nucleocytoplasmic transport potentially contributing to the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases. In cancer NUP54 may influence tumor progression through its interactions with other nucleoporins like NUP214 which is frequently overexpressed or rearranged in various tumor types. Understanding NUP54's role in these diseases could provide insights for therapeutic targeting.
