NXPH1 or Neurexophilin-1 is a protein involved in synaptic function. This protein weighs approximately 32 kDa and plays a role in neurotransmitter release. Researchers recognize NXPH1 by its presence in the central nervous system notably expressed in the brain. NXPH1 acts as a ligand for neurexins which are essential for synapse formation and function.
Biological function summary

Neurexophilin-1 participates in neuronal communication and acts as part of a complex with neurexins. By binding to neurexins NXPH1 influences the organization of synaptic junctions facilitating signaling between neurons. These interactions are critical for processes such as learning and memory as they support the maintenance and regulation of synaptic connections.

Pathways

NXPH1 significantly contributes to the regulation of neurotransmission and synaptic signaling. In the glutamatergic synaptic pathway NXPH1 interacts with neurexins to facilitate the release of glutamate an important neurotransmitter. Additionally it may play a role in the dopaminergic synaptic pathways by influencing dopamine receptor connectivity with proteins like neuroligins.

Neurexophilin-1 has connections to neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and schizophrenia. In these conditions alterations in NXPH1 expression or function may disrupt synaptic organization leading to impaired neuronal communication. The interaction between NXPH1 and neurexins such as NRXN1 becomes important in understanding the synaptic abnormalities observed in these disorders.
