ONECUT2 also known as Oc2 is a transcription factor that plays a significant role in gene regulation. It belongs to the Onecut family of transcription factors characterized by the presence of an atypical homeodomain and a single-cut domain. ONECUT2 has a molecular weight of around 51 kDa. This protein shows a broad expression across various tissues including liver pancreas and brain and it regulates genes involved in important developmental processes.
ONECUT2 influences cell differentiation metabolic processes and organogenesis. It does not exist as part of a large complex but interacts with specific DNA sequences to modulate transcription. This protein contributes to proper liver and pancreatic development by activating genes critical for functional maturation. It also has a role in neural development and has been linked with neuronal gene expression patterns.
ONECUT2 participates in the regulation of the glucose metabolism and hepatocyte differentiation pathways. Within these pathways ONECUT2 acts in concert with other transcription factors like HNF6 (Hepatocyte Nuclear Factor 6) another member of the Onecut family to regulate gene expression. The protein exerts influence over processes critical for maintaining cellular function and development highlighting its implications in various physiological contexts.
ONECUT2 has connections to cancer and type 2 diabetes. In cancer abnormal expression levels can influence tumor progression and metastasis often linked with the protein’s ability to modulate genes that control cell proliferation and survival. In the context of type 2 diabetes altered ONECUT2 expression affects insulin secretion and glucose homeostasis commonly in conjunction with proteins such as PDX1 (Pancreatic Duodenal Homeobox 1) impacting pancreatic function. Understanding the role of ONECUT2 in these conditions provides valuable insights for therapeutic strategies.
