What is the Golgi apparatus?
The Golgi apparatus is a membrane-bound organelle in eukaryotic cells that functions as a central hub for modifying, sorting, and packaging proteins and lipids. It receives molecules from the endoplasmic reticulum, processes them—often by adding sugars or other chemical groups—and then directs them to their final destinations, such as the cell membrane, lysosomes, or secretion outside the cell. The Golgi apparatus is characterised by a series of stacked flattened membrane sacs (cisternae) and is a key player in cellular transport and secretion.
From an organelle marker perspective, the Golgi apparatus is identified by specific proteins that help define its structure and function within the cell’s endomembrane system. Key markers such as GM130 (cis-Golgi) and TGN46 (trans-Golgi network) are used to distinguish different regions of the Golgi stack, each responsible for distinct stages of protein processing and trafficking.
