What are ribosomes?
Ribosomes are essential organelles responsible for translating messenger RNA (mRNA) into functional proteins. From an organelle marker perspective, ribosomes are identified by specific ribosomal proteins and ribosomal RNAs (rRNAs) that form their structural and functional core. One commonly used marker is the S6 ribosomal protein, a component of the 40S small subunit, which is frequently targeted in immunofluorescence and western blotting to visualize ribosomal distribution and activity. Other markers include RPLP0 and RPS3, which help distinguish between the large (60S) and small (40S) subunits, respectively.
What are ribosome markers used to study?
Ribosome markers are crucial in studies of protein synthesis, cellular stress responses, and ribosome biogenesis. Ribosomes can be free-floating in the cytoplasm or bound to the rough endoplasmic reticulum (ER), where they contribute to the synthesis of membrane-bound and secretory proteins.
