Alpha 1 Acid Glycoprotein also known as AGP or Orosomucoid has a molecular mass of about 41-43 kDa. This glycoprotein mainly occurs in the liver and circulates in the bloodstream. It belongs to the acute-phase protein family and increases in response to inflammation and infection. Its carbohydrate-rich composition contributes to its role in various physiological processes.
The glycoprotein acts as a transport protein modulating the distribution and availability of various endogenous and exogenous substances including pharmaceuticals. It does not form part of a larger complex but influences the pharmacokinetics of drugs by binding to them and altering their free concentration. It shows anti-inflammatory properties by inhibiting immune cell activity and affecting cytokine production.
AGP interacts in the acute-phase response pathway which is essential for the immediate response to infection or injury. It connects with several inflammatory mediators including cytokines like IL-6. Additionally it relates to the drug metabolism pathway impacting the transportation and efficacy of drugs while proteins such as albumin and transthyretin also play roles in these processes.
Elevated levels of AGP associate with inflammatory conditions including rheumatoid arthritis and cancer. In rheumatoid arthritis inflammation causes overproduction of this protein influencing drug distribution. In cancer its levels correlate with tumor progression and metastasis. AGP interacts with other acute-phase proteins like C-reactive protein which increases under similar pathological conditions.
