<p>A BLAST analysis was used to suggest cross-reactivity with OspB from B. burgdorferi, afzelii, spielmanii, and garinii sources based on 100% homology with the immunizing sequence, and with B. valaisiana based on 99% homology. Cross-reactivity with OspB from other sources has not been determined.</p>

OspB also known as Outer Surface Protein B is an important component of certain bacterial membranes particularly distinguished in Borrelia burgdorferi the causative agent of Lyme disease. The protein has a molecular mass of approximately 43 kDa. It is expressed predominantly on the outer surface of these spirochetes which serves as a physical barrier and an interaction point between the bacterium and its host environment. Its structural role is significant in the integrity and function of the bacterial outer membrane.
Biological function summary

This protein plays a significant role in promoting bacterial adhesion and immune evasion. OspB forms part of a complex with other outer surface proteins such as OspA which cooperatively assists the bacteria to persist within the tick vector and mammalian host.
