The Programmed Cell Death Protein 5 (PDCD5) also known as TFAR19 is a protein with a molecular mass of about 14 kDa. This protein is expressed widely in human tissues with high levels seen in heart liver skeletal muscle lung and pancreas. Its main role is in promoting programmed cell death or apoptosis by interacting directly with apoptotic molecules. PDCD5 translocates quickly to the nucleus in cells undergoing apoptosis indicating its direct involvement.
Biological function summary

PDCD5 assists in apoptosis by acting as an activator of this cell death mechanism. It is not part of a known protein complex but plays an essential role in enhancing the process of programmed cell death. Researchers have observed a connection between PDCD5 and p53 a well-studied tumor suppressor protein suggesting that PDCD5 may amplify p53-mediated apoptotic responses. This interaction highlights the impact of PDCD5 in cell cycle regulation and stress responses pointing to its potential as a therapeutic target in controlling abnormal cell proliferation.

Pathways

PDCD5 plays a role in apoptosis and DNA damage response pathways. It supports the p53 pathway which is important for preventing tumor formation by slowing down or stopping the cell cycle to allow DNA repair or to induce apoptosis if DNA damage is irreversible. PDCD5 may also interact with proteins like P53 promoting their apoptotic activities. Additionally through the involvement in p53 pathways PDCD5 potentially contributes to maintaining genome integrity.

PDCD5 links to cancer and neurodegenerative conditions. Its expression levels often decrease in various cancers highlighting its role in suppressing tumor growth. When PDCD5 expression is lower cells might evade apoptosis leading to tumor proliferation. In some neurodegenerative disorders altered PDCD5 function or expression has been observed suggesting its involvement in neuronal cell death. PDCD5's interaction with proteins like p53 in these conditions points to its relevance for understanding and potentially managing cancer and neurodegeneration.
