PDE4A or phosphodiesterase 4A is an isoform part of the PDE4 family known for hydrolyzing cAMP an important second messenger in cells. The mass of PDE4A can vary depending on the isoform with commonly referenced masses around 70-100 kDa. This enzyme is expressed in various tissues including the brain immune cells and lungs. Other popular names for this protein include PDE46 and DPDE2 indicating its different isoforms and specific functionalities across tissue types.

PDE4A plays an important role in regulating intracellular levels of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) a critical component in signaling pathways that affect numerous cellular processes.
