Biological function summary
PDP1 plays an essential role in converting pyruvate to acetyl-CoA a substrate for the Krebs cycle. PDP1 is part of the pyruvate dehydrogenase complex a multi-enzyme complex important for linking glycolysis to the citric acid cycle. This regulation ensures that cells can respond effectively to the energetic needs and environmental conditions optimizing production of ATP from glucose.

PDP1 is involved in key metabolic pathways like the citric acid cycle and glucose metabolism. In glucose metabolism PDP1 interacts with pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase (PDK) as both enzymes control the phosphorylation state of the pyruvate dehydrogenase complex.
