Supplementary information

PEBP4 also known as phosphatidylethanolamine-binding protein 4 is a protein that plays a role in intracellular signaling. It belongs to the PEBP family and has a molecular mass of approximately 21 kDa. PEBP4 is expressed in various human tissues with higher levels in the prostate lung and placenta. It functions by interacting with different signaling molecules and affecting their activity.
Biological function summary

PEBP4 modulates several cellular processes including apoptosis and cell proliferation. It is not known to be part of a larger complex but seems to exert its effects by binding to phospholipids and influencing signaling pathways. It shows interaction with several other molecules suggesting that it might have a regulatory role in cell survival and stress responses.

Pathways

This protein influences both the MAPK/ERK and apoptotic pathways. In the MAPK/ERK pathway PEBP4 interacts with key components to enhance cell survival signals. It is also associated with proteins like Raf-1 and MEK impacting their activity in cellular growth and differentiation. Through these pathways PEBP4 seems to control the balance between cell proliferation and apoptosis.

Research shows a relationship between PEBP4 and cancer as well as some inflammatory conditions. Increased expression of PEBP4 is observed in certain cancers including prostate and breast cancer. The protein's role in these diseases involves its impact on cellular survival pathways where it might increase cancer cell resistance to apoptosis. It also interacts with proteins like Bcl-2 which are involved in cell survival mechanisms and could contribute to the progression of cancerous conditions.
