Activity summary

PRDM4 also known as PFM1 or PFM-1 is a member of the PR domain-containing protein family. It possesses an approximate molecular weight of 75 kDa. This protein functions primarily as a transcription factor with roles in the regulation of gene expression. PRDM4 localizes mainly in the nucleus where it influences transcriptional control. Expression of PRDM4/PFM1 has been observed in various tissues but shows significant levels in the brain and reproductive organs indicating its involvement in important biological processes in these regions.

Biological function summary

PRDM4/PFM1 acts in cell differentiation and development. It is part of the KRAB-ZnF silencing complex which connects to other components to modify chromatin structure and regulate gene expression. This activity is important to maintaining cellular functions and contributes to cellular differentiation states. Understanding PRDM4/PFM1’s role within this complex can provide insights into its broader biological actions and its influence on cellular dynamics.

Pathways

PRDM4/PFM1 plays a significant role in the TGF-beta and Hedgehog signaling pathways. These pathways are major determinants of cellular growth differentiation and apoptosis. Within these pathways PRDM4/PFM1 can associate with other proteins like SMAD family members and GLI transcription factors which are important in mediating cellular responses to external signals.

Associated diseases and disorders

PRDM4/PFM1 links to neurodegenerative conditions and certain cancers. Its dysregulation has been noted in glioblastoma where an altered expression pattern suggests its involvement in tumor progression. PRDM4/PFM1 interacts with proteins involved in these disorders such as PTEN—a known tumor suppressor gene—highlighting its potential role in the development and progression of these diseases. Understanding these connections is key for developing therapeutic strategies targeting PRDM4/PFM1-related pathways.
