Prominin-2 also known as PROM2 is a transmembrane glycoprotein weighing approximately 124 kDa. It is part of the prominin family and is mainly expressed in epithelial cells of various tissues including the kidney pancreas and intestine. Mechanically Prominin-2 is involved in the organization of membrane protrusions due to its ability to bind to cholesterol. It localizes to plasma membrane sites and plays a role in maintaining cell morphology.
Prominin-2 participates in several processes involving cellular differentiation and maintenance. It does not form a part of any known complex but interacts with cellular membranes to influence lipid composition. Prominin-2 facilitates cellular processes like epithelial cell polarity and is implicated in maintaining stem cell populations. Its association with membrane structures is key to its function in these contexts.
Prominin-2 acts in cellular polarity and wound healing pathways. In the polarity pathway Prominin-2 associates with proteins like CDC42 essential for establishing asymmetry in cells. Within wound healing it interacts with the MAPK signaling pathway where its involvement affects cell migration and repair mechanisms. These pathways underline the role of Prominin-2 in maintaining epithelial integrity and repair.
Research links Prominin-2 to certain forms of cancer and retinal degeneration. In cancer Prominin-2 promotes tumorigenic potential by influencing cancer cell stemness and resistance to apoptosis. Connections to cancer-related proteins like CD133 highlight its role in tumor biology. In retinal degeneration alterations in Prominin-2 expression correlate with visual impairment possibly through disruptions in retinal epithelial cell structure.
