Biological function summary
PSMC1 functions as an integral part of the 19S regulatory particle of the 26S proteasome complex. This complex facilitates the recognition unfolding and translocation of polyubiquitinated proteins into the proteolytic chamber of the 20S core particle for degradation. This activity plays a significant role in regulating intracellular protein concentrations thereby controlling processes like cell cycle progression apoptosis and responses to oxidative stress. PSMC1’s activity ensures a clean cellular environment by removing damaged or nonfunctional proteins.
Pathways
Functions of PSMC1 integrate into the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway and the cell cycle control pathway. In the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway PSMC1 collaborates with other ATPase subunits and regulatory proteins helping to maintain protein degradation balance and works closely with ubiquitin-conjugating enzymes responsible for tagging proteins for degradation. In the cell cycle control pathway the degradation of cyclins and cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitors by the proteasome including PSMC1 regulates cell cycle transitions and ensures proper cell division and function.
