Protocadherin 21 also known as PCDH21 or retinal cadherin is a protein with a molecular mass of approximately 101 kDa. This protein is a member of the cadherin superfamily which is known for its role in cell-cell adhesion. PCDH21 is widely expressed in the retina notably in the photoreceptor cells which are critical for visual function. Its presence in these cells points to its significance in maintaining retinal structural integrity and potentially influencing cell signaling pathways necessary for visual processing.
