Biological function summary
PSMD11 is essential for the proper assembly and activity of the 26S proteasome complex which is important for ubiquitin-mediated proteolysis. This process controls protein turnover and regulates the concentration of various proteins to maintain cellular homeostasis. PSMD11 enhances the degradation of misfolded or damaged proteins therefore preventing the accumulation of toxic protein aggregates within cells. Its expression levels can modulate the proteasome activity in response to cellular conditions.
Pathways
PSMD11 plays a significant role in the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway which is critical for protein homeostasis and degradation of regulatory proteins. This pathway involves several important proteins including ubiquitin which tags substrates for degradation. PSMD11 also interfaces with signaling pathways that regulate cell cycle progression and apoptosis such as interactions with p53 and c-Myc proteins. These pathways ensure the balance between cell survival and programmed cell death.
