PTTG1IP also known as PTTG1 interacting protein plays an important role in cell regulation by facilitating the transport of the securin protein PTTG1 to the cell nucleus. This protein has a molecular weight of approximately 23 kDa. It is expressed highly in the testis but also found in other tissues like the placenta and thymus. The transport function of PTTG1IP ensures proper cell division and control of genomic stability.
Biological function summary

PTTG1IP is essential in controlling the cell cycle by enabling the proper localization of the PTTG1 protein. By being a part of the larger regulatory network PTTG1IP impacts the balance between cell proliferation and apoptosis. It is not a part of a classical protein complex but interacts directly with its namesake PTTG1 to carry out its functions. This interaction underpins critical cellular processes necessary for tissue growth and repair.

Pathways

PTTG1IP functions in the regulation of the cell cycle and plays a role in the mitotic spindle checkpoint. It interacts closely with proteins such as Cyclin B1 and separase which are central to these pathways. By modulating the activity of PTTG1 PTTG1IP helps to ensure proper chromosomal segregation during mitosis maintaining genomic integrity across cell generations.

Alterations in PTTG1IP expression are linked to cancer particularly breast cancer and pituitary tumors. The overexpression of PTTG1IP corresponds with increased levels of PTTG1 which can disrupt normal cellular controls and promote oncogenic processes. In this context PTTG1IP may influence the stability of other proteins like securin and p53 which are integral in tumorigenic pathways highlighting its significance in cancer biology.
