Supplementary information

Rab24 also known as Ras-related protein Rab-24 is a member of the Rab GTPase family. It participates in intracellular vesicle trafficking by functioning as a molecular switch that cycles between inactive GDP-bound and active GTP-bound states. Rab24 has a molecular weight of approximately 23 kDa. This protein is expressed in various tissues including the brain and testis suggesting it plays diverse roles in these areas.
Biological function summary

The Rab24 protein is essential in autophagy a cellular process that degrades and recycles components. It is known to participate in the formation of autophagic vacuoles a part of the greater autophagy pathway. Although not primarily part of a larger complex its interaction with other proteins supports the cell's homeostatic balance. Rab24 is less understood compared to other Rab proteins making it the focus of research for its unique properties.

Pathways

Involvement in autophagy and endocytic trafficking is established for Rab24. It plays a role in the regulation of intracellular membrane trafficking essential for cellular maintenance and nutrient supply. Rab24 associates with proteins such as LC3 during autophagic vacuole formation. These interactions position Rab24 as a significant player in pathways that maintain cellular health and response to stress.

Dysfunctional Rab24 activity has connections to neurodegenerative diseases and cancer. Abnormalities in autophagy linked to Rab24 mutations or dysregulation can contribute to conditions like Alzheimer's disease. Rab24's interplay with proteins like LC3 highlights its importance as these connections underline the potential for therapeutic targeting to address these disorders' underlying mechanisms.
