Supplementary information

Ractopamine also known as both RACT and Optaflexx is a β-adrenergic agonist with a mass of approximately 299.4 g/mol. It acts mechanically by stimulating β-adrenergic receptors which increases protein synthesis and muscle growth. It is expressed mainly in muscle tissues where it binds to receptors on the cell surface to initiate its biochemical actions. Ractopamine is commonly used in animal agriculture to promote leanness in livestock.
Biological function summary

Ractopamine modulates muscle cell metabolism and growth. It integrates into mechanisms that augment muscle protein synthesis while inhibiting protein degradation which results in an increase in lean muscle mass. Ractopamine interacts with β-adrenergic receptors part of the larger G-protein-coupled receptor family to promote these effects. This interaction highlights its role in enhancing muscle tissue expression and overall efficiency in biological energy usage.

Pathways

Ractopamine participates significantly in the adrenergic signaling pathway. This pathway involves the conversion of chemical signals into cellular responses which are important for muscle growth and fat metabolism. It relates closely to proteins such as the β1 and β2 adrenergic receptors which play a fundamental role in mediating its effects on muscle cells. These interactions facilitate the increased metabolic activity that aligns with the pathway of muscle hypertrophy and fat redistribution.

Ractopamine relates to conditions like cardiovascular issues and stress responses in animals. The chronic use of Ractopamine may exacerbate symptoms associated with these disorders due to its stimulatory effects. In the context of human consumption residues in meat could influence adrenergic receptors potentially linking indirectly to disorders such as hypertension. Additionally the target's interaction with β-adrenergic receptors highlights its relation to stress-response mechanisms which can influence cardiovascular health.
