Supplementary information

RBM28 also known as RNA-binding motif protein 28 weighs approximately 97 kDa. This protein resides primarily in the nucleolus of cells where it plays key mechanical roles in RNA processing events. As an RNA-binding protein RBM28 binds specifically to snoRNA pre-rRNA and possibly other nucleolar transcripts. It is expressed in various tissues with high expression levels in the brain heart and skeletal muscles indicating its widespread importance in cellular functions.
Biological function summary

RBM28 functions as an essential component of the ribonucleoprotein complexes. It associates with small nucleolar RNAs and pre-ribosomal particles facilitating the maturation of rRNA and the assembly of ribosomes. By engaging in these processes RBM28 ensures the proper synthesis and assembly of ribosomal subunits which are important for protein synthesis in cells. The protein partners with others such as NOP56 and FBL in processing pre-rRNA to mature forms.

Pathways

RBM28 plays a significant role in ribosome biogenesis and RNA metabolic processing. Its involvement in the biogenesis of ribosomes places it within the broader gene expression pathway. The protein interacts with others like DDX21 and nucleolin within this pathway showing its intricate connection to the production and maturation of ribosomes. Such associations help maintain the balance of ribosome production ensuring cells adapt and respond to their translational needs.

RBM28 mutations or dysfunctions relate to conditions like alopecia and neurological disorders. Notably mutations in RBM28 have been linked to alopecia neurological defects and endocrinopathy syndrome indicating the protein's role in hair brain and endocrine system function. The protein's interactions with nucleolin and FBL suggest it might influence developmental pathways affecting neurological and hair follicle homeostasis. Understanding these connections can help in deciphering pathophysiological mechanisms underlying these disorders.
