Function

RNA-binding protein that specifically bind the 3'-UTR of CDKN1A transcripts, leading to maintain the stability of CDKN1A transcripts, thereby acting as a mediator of the p53/TP53 family to regulate CDKN1A. CDKN1A is a cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor transcriptionally regulated by the p53/TP53 family to induce cell cycle arrest. Isoform 1, but not isoform 2, has the ability to induce cell cycle arrest in G1 and maintain the stability of CDKN1A transcripts induced by p53/TP53. Also acts as a mRNA splicing factor. Specifically regulates the expression of FGFR2-IIIb, an epithelial cell-specific isoform of FGFR2. Plays a role in myogenic differentiation. (Microbial infection) Essential factor for the splicing of the pre-mRNAs of human parvovirus B19 (B19V) and for the expression of B19V 11-kDa protein, which enhances viral replication.

Supplementary info

Activity summary

RNA-binding motif protein 38 also known as RBM38 or RNPC1 is a protein that interacts with RNA to influence gene expression. RBM38 has a molecular mass of approximately 26 kDa. It is mainly found in human tissues with notable expression in the liver kidney and brain. This protein contains an RNA recognition motif (RRM) that helps it bind to target RNA molecules affecting their stability and translation.

Biological function summary

RBM38 participates in post-transcriptional regulation modulating the stability and translation of messenger RNAs (mRNAs). It does not function alone but associates with other ribonucleoprotein complexes to achieve its regulatory roles. Through its binding activity RBM38 can influence cell cycle progression and apoptosis by regulating mRNAs such as p53 and p21 which are key players in cell fate decisions.

Pathways

RBM38 is involved in the p53 signaling pathway which plays a critical role in cell cycle control and response to DNA damage. It associates with proteins like Mdm2 and p21 which are vital components of this pathway. Additionally RBM38 interacts with the MAPK pathway which is important for regulating responses to various extracellular stimuli and ensuring proper cellular functions like proliferation and differentiation.

Associated diseases and disorders

RBM38 has been linked to cancer and neurodegenerative diseases. In cancer its interaction with p53 and Mdm2 influences tumor suppression activities affecting tumor development and progression. In neurodegenerative diseases RBM38's regulation of mRNA stability may impact the expression of proteins involved in neuron survival and repair. Abnormal RBM38 function can disrupt these processes contributing to disease pathology.
