REG1 alpha also known as regenerating islet-derived protein 1 alpha or REG1A is a 19 kDa protein. Found primarily in the pancreas this protein also shows expression in gastric and intestinal tissues. REG1 alpha belongs to the C-type lectin superfamily known for their carbohydrate recognition capabilities. The protein involves itself directly in cell growth and proliferation through regenerative patterns essential for cellular homeostasis.
Biological function summary

The REG1 alpha protein stimulates pancreatic beta-cell proliferation influencing insulin production and secretion. It exists as a monomer but may participate in larger complexes during specific cellular responses. Its role expands to the modulation of cellular differentiation and inflammation control within the gastrointestinal tract. By aiding tissue repair REG1 alpha contributes to the maintenance of a healthy epithelial lining.

Pathways

The mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway sees REG1 alpha engaging in the regulation of cell proliferation by interacting with similar proteins involved in this signaling cascade. It also plays a role in the JAK-STAT pathway where it coordinates with the interleukins which are important for signaling that controls immune responses. REG1 alpha’s function in these pathways highlights its role in the regulation of growth and repair mechanisms.

REG1 alpha shows altered expression patterns in diabetes and some forms of cancer such as pancreatic cancer. In diabetes the protein’s involvement with glucose metabolism connects it to insulin regulation issues often interacting with insulin signaling proteins. In pancreatic cancer changes in REG1 alpha levels correlate with cellular growth and tissue regeneration processes that may become dysregulated further involving proteins like KRAS that stimulate cancer cell proliferation.
