Product details

A central structure in the secretory pathway of the cell comprises an elaborate endomembranous system with the multifunctional endoplasmic reticulum (ER) as a major constituent. Newly synthesized secretory proteins and a variety of resident proteins of the pathway enter the rough endoplasmic reticulum. Subsequently, the proteins may be sorted selectively to different membrane-delimited organelles including the Golgi apparatus, endosomes, lysosomes and secretory vesicles. Abcam provides antibodies to a new family of ER-associated proteins, the reticulons, which show a tissue specific distribution.

Supplementary information

Reticulon 1A also known as neuroendocrine-specific protein (NSP) is part of the reticulon family of proteins. It is a membrane protein with a mass of approximately 135 kDa. This protein is found primarily in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) where it participates in the maintenance of ER structure. Reticulon 1A is expressed in neuronal cells as well as in peripheral tissues. It plays a role in shaping the tubular endoplasmic reticulum which is important for its function within the cell.
Biological function summary

The reticulon family members including Reticulon 1A influence membrane dynamics and participate in various cellular processes. Reticulon 1A is not typically associated with any specific protein complex but interacts with other ER-shaping proteins to help maintain the network of the ER. This interaction allows it to participate in lipid biosynthesis and protein processing which are both important for maintaining cellular homeostasis.

Pathways

Reticulon 1A interacts with several other proteins that are involved in the regulation of ER morphology. It plays a role in the ER stress response pathway which involves proteins such as BiP and IRE1. Additionally Reticulon 1A has a role in apoptosis pathways particularly in stress conditions when misfolded proteins accumulate in the ER.

Reticulon 1A has links to neurodegenerative diseases and certain forms of cancer. In the context of neurodegeneration altered expression of Reticulon 1A has been observed in Alzheimer's disease where it interacts with amyloid precursor protein (APP). In cancer Reticulon 1A expression can influence tumor growth by affecting cellular proliferation and apoptosis making it a potential target for therapeutic strategies.
