The RFXANK protein also known as regulatory factor X-associated ankyrin-containing protein is a component of the RFX complex. RFXANK has a molecular mass of approximately 27 kDa. This protein plays a mechanical role in the regulation of transcription by interacting with DNA sequences and recruiting various co-factors necessary for gene expression. RFXANK is largely expressed in immune cells where it modulates processes important for immune function.
Biological function summary

RFXANK acts as part of the RFX complex which is known for its role in the regulation of class II major histocompatibility complex (MHC) genes. These genes are significant for proper immune response allowing immune cells to present antigens and initiate defense mechanisms. Activates transcription from class II MHC promoters. Activation requires the activity of the MHC class II transactivator/CIITA. May regulate other genes in the cell. RFX binds the X1 box of MHC-II promoters (PubMed : 10072068, PubMed : 10725724, PubMed : 9806546). May also potentiate the activation of RAF1 (By similarity).. Isoform 2 is not involved in the positive regulation of MHC class II genes.
