Biological function summary
RHCG operates to maintain cellular and systemic homeostasis by participating in acid-base balance. It acts as part of a membrane transport mechanism contributing to the movement of ions across cell membranes. The protein does not form a complex but functions independently to transport ammonia an end-product of nitrogen metabolism. Its activity is important in epithelial cells where it assists in the secretion or reabsorption of ammonium playing a critical part in excretion processes in the renal and hepatic systems.
Pathways
There is a substantial significance of RHCG within the acid-base regulation pathway and nitrogen metabolism pathway. RHCG collaborates with other Rhesus proteins notably Rhesus glycoprotein B (RHBG) in these pathways. These pathways are integral to maintaining acid-base equilibrium and the excretion of excess nitrogen in the form of ammonium emphasizing its relevance in vital physiological processes.
