Supplementary information

RHCG also known as Rhesus glycoprotein C is a transporter protein involved in the facilitation of ammonia and ammonium across cellular membranes. This protein has a molecular mass of approximately 50 kDa and it exhibits expression in tissues such as the kidney liver and skin. In the kidney particularly RHCG plays a significant role in the transport process associated with acid-base balance. Its function extends to the regulation of pH in body fluids which is fundamental for maintaining homeostasis.
Biological function summary

RHCG operates to maintain cellular and systemic homeostasis by participating in acid-base balance. It acts as part of a membrane transport mechanism contributing to the movement of ions across cell membranes. The protein does not form a complex but functions independently to transport ammonia an end-product of nitrogen metabolism. Its activity is important in epithelial cells where it assists in the secretion or reabsorption of ammonium playing a critical part in excretion processes in the renal and hepatic systems.

Pathways

There is a substantial significance of RHCG within the acid-base regulation pathway and nitrogen metabolism pathway. RHCG collaborates with other Rhesus proteins notably Rhesus glycoprotein B (RHBG) in these pathways. These pathways are integral to maintaining acid-base equilibrium and the excretion of excess nitrogen in the form of ammonium emphasizing its relevance in vital physiological processes.

RHCG associates with conditions concerning defective ammonium transport and acid-base imbalance. For example aberrations in RHCG function can contribute to metabolic acidosis or renal tubular acidosis. It displays potential interaction with the Rhesus glycoprotein family and may affect the regulation of pH levels in pathologic conditions. Dysregulation has implications in disease states where ammonia transport is compromised impacting the overall metabolic function and health.

Target data

Ammonium transporter involved in the maintenance of acid-base homeostasis. Transports ammonium and its related derivative methylammonium across the plasma membrane of epithelial cells likely contributing to renal transepithelial ammonia transport and ammonia metabolism. Postulated to primarily mediate an electroneutral bidirectional transport of NH3 ammonia species according to a mechanism that implies interaction of an NH4(+) ion with acidic residues of the pore entry followed by dissociation of NH4(+) into NH3 and H(+). As a result NH3 transits through the central pore and is protonated on the extracellular side reforming NH4(+) (PubMed : 11062476, PubMed : 14761968, PubMed : 15929723, PubMed : 16477434, PubMed : 16580862, PubMed : 24077989). May act as a CO2 channel providing for renal acid secretion (PubMed : 24077989).
