The function of RIMS3 revolves around its role in synaptic processes. RIMS3 contributes to the regulation of synaptic vesicle priming and neurotransmitter release. It functions as part of a protein complex that includes other synaptic proteins like Munc13 and RIM-binding protein. These interactions stabilize synaptic transmission and maintain precise communication between neurons. The absence or alteration of RIMS3 can disrupt these processes and result in altered synaptic strength and plasticity.
Pathways
RIMS3 participates in synaptic vesicle cycle and neurotransmitter release pathways. It interacts with members of the Rab family such as Rab3 playing a part in the vesicle docking and priming steps critical for synaptic activity. Through these pathways RIMS3 aligns functionally with related proteins like Synaptotagmin and SNARE complex components amplifying the efficiency of synaptic vesicle release which underpins neuronal communication and network activity.
